Artificial intelligence is rapidly entering the pharmacovigilance landscape. From case intake to literature screening and signal detection support, AI-enabled tools are everywhere.<\/p>\n

Yet – Adding AI does not automatically create the sought after efficiency.<\/em><\/p>\n

From a strategic perspective, the greatest opportunity for innovation in pharmacovigilance lies elsewhere. It lies in rethinking how systems and processes are designed in the first place.<\/p>\n

AI vs. Automation<\/h6>\n

Automation has been part of pharmacovigilance for years. Workflow engines route cases, rules trigger alerts, and scripted processes handle routine tasks.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence introduces something fundamentally different. AI models can interpret unstructured information, identify patterns, and support expert judgement.<\/p>\n

Automation improves efficiency.<\/strong>
\nAI augments expertise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One is not better than the other \u2013 they support two different usages.<\/p>\n

Most pharmacovigilance processes were carefully designed to optimally aid humans as the only user group in the system. Data entry, validation, review, and decision points were built around human interaction with user-friendly software with a strong UX focus.<\/p>\n

When AI is simply added to these environments, it remains an add-on tool rather than an integrated participant in the workflow. Sometimes creating more complexity than real improvement. Teams may find themselves validating AI outputs, reconciling results between systems, or adding additional review layers to remain compliant. The ROI gone missing.<\/p>\n
